Shih Tzu Chihuahua Mix, Long Haired Chihuahuas, Mini Chihuahua
The Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix is also referred to as a Shichi or Shi Chi. They are wonderful mixed breed that are 50% mix between the lovely Shi Tzu and the Chihuahua.

When it comes to anything to do with the Shih Tzu breed we are slightly biased – mainly because we have owned three before – Oliver, Benson and Gizmo. We loved them all equally and missed them terribly when they passed over to doggie heaven. We have never owned a Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix but we can still provide a little information on this mixed breed.
As with any mixed breed it is possible that the offspring may inherit more characteristics from a specific parent. It is the same principal as with humans – we inherit our parents genes, characteristics, hair color etc and it is the same with the Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix (Shichi).
This mixed breed is recognized by the American Kennel Club (which you might find surprising) and they are a wonderful mixed breed to own. They can come in a variety of colors ranging from brown and white, black and white, fawn, brindle and sable.
The coat can vary from dog to dog (again this depends on the characteristics your specific dog has inherited from the parent). For example your beloved mixed breed Shichi may have a really soft coat which is short or the coat might be long and a little rough and even slightly wiry (it just depends on the parents).
The Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix is quite small with each dog ranging in weight from five up to fifteen pounds. In terms of height the Shichi can grow up to twelve inches and be as short as six inches.
This mixed breed need to be groomed regularly – this will stop any tangles from building up and also mean that any problems that might be affecting the skin are spotted early – some people are mistaken and think that the Shichi is good for people with allergies – and yes they don’t shed heavily (even breeds that are considered hypoallergenic shed a little) they are not hypoallergenic.
As with all small dog breeds young children should be supervised when playing with them not only because this mixed breed can be a little protective but also because they are small and easily injured.
The average life span of the Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix can of course vary depending on your dog but the average is twelve up to eighteen years of age. As with all breeds you need to start obedience training from an early age and it is the same with this cross breed. Stay patient, fair and consistent and you should not have any significant problems. Although some people feel that potty training is more problematic with the Shichi as long as you start early and follow basic potty training techniques everything should be fine.
In terms of potty training – start early – tell your puppy that you are going outside for a reason (and not just for your puppy to play). Attach a leash to your puppy and say ‘Potty Time’ take your puppy outside and go to the same place that your pooch normally pees or poops (the smell will stimulate your puppy’s bladder). When your puppy is about to pee or poop say ‘Go Poop’ and when he has done his business give him lots of praise and a treat.
When it comes to health problems you should always consider that your puppy can develop health problems that are specific to either breed i.e. the Chihuahua and/or the Shih Tzu.
Always do your research before you purchase a new dog but we highly recommend this wonderful mixed breed.
